Areas of Specialty
ANXIETY
Anxiety is a familiar feeling for all of us. It may be butterflies before a first date or a racing heart right before a big presentation. Often, anxiety is just a natural response to life’s challenges. It prepares us for what lies ahead and spurs us into action. For some, though, anxiety can take over, triggering panic or simply never letting up. In fact, this happens more often than most realize. Prevalence estimates suggest as many as 1 in 3 adults in the US will be affected by debilitating symptoms of anxiety at some point in their lifetime. Fortunately, psychotherapy has proved to be an effective means for alleviating this problem. Drawing on years of continuous training and experience, Dr. Klein relies on proven evidence based cognitive behavioral interventions to address anxiety-related symptoms such as chronic worrying, panic attacks, obsessive thoughts and debilitating phobias.
group therapy
Simply put, group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a group of people meet to discuss, work through and resolve their problems together under the guidance of a therapist. A central tenet of this approach to treatment is that we are, in essence, social beings who are continuously interacting with one another in groups. From our earliest experiences in our families of origin, to later experiences in school, work, home life and community, we all move through life interacting with each other, constantly embedded in groups. How we are treated and how we function in these groups impact the way we view ourselves and the world around us. Group therapy can be a very powerful tool for increasing awareness of this impact, providing a fresh perspective and the opportunity to practice new ways of relating to others.
DEPRESsion
Like anxiety, Depressed mood can be a normal response to difficult life circumstances. For many, though, it can linger for weeks and even months.
The good news is that research focusing on mood disorders has established psychotherapy as an effective means of treating persistent depressive symptoms. Drawing on these findings, Dr. Klein relies on evidenced based techniques to address depression. With treatment, one can find a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger connection to others.
Couples & family therapy
Ideally, couples and families fulfill our basic needs for love and acceptance. They provide support, structure and stability. They help to define how we see ourselves and how we interact with the world. Therapy offers couples & families an opportunity to refine their communication skills and establish needed boundaries. Treatment can help parents develop new techniques for addressing concerns about their children’s behavior. It also provides a supportive setting for children to express their concerns and develop more appropriate responses to challenges at home.
It is often said that the best way to have a meaningful relationship is to work at it every day. Collaboration, compassion, and communication all go a long way to creating a happy life with your spouse or partner. Therapy offers couples a chance to build on these components, resetting the tone of their relationships in order to grow stronger together.
Dr. Klein’s compassionate approach and extensive experience working with couples, children and families provides a strong framework for rebuilding solid family connections.
TRAUMA AND ADJUSTMENT DISORDERS
Dr. Klein also specializes in the treatment of Trauma and Adjustment Disorders. Most of us will experience some form of trauma in our lives. For some, though, these traumatic experiences can be destabilizing, impacting performance at work or school and affecting relationships with family and friends. For those struggling to cope with distressing memories associated with trauma, intense anxiety and sleep disturbance are common. But trauma is not the only thing that can lead to these problems. For many, it may be chronic stress or a response to a sudden change in life circumstances, like ending a relationship, losing a job, or relocating to a new city. In either case, individual therapy has been found to be a highly effective intervention, helping those who receive it to overcome these obstacles.
